10 Years Later……………
Present Date: 23rd July 2018.
Jack’s blurry form came into view, Ianto sat upright, desperate to get a look at his lover, to touch him through the solid glass between them.
Owen was in there with Jack, but it wasn’t enough. He needed his Captain with him, to be able to speak to him, to sense that he wasn’t far away.
Jack’s habitual glow had dulled in the pain and exhaustion, the weakness in his features was crystal clear.
Ianto tapped the glass rapidly, willing Jack to at least move.
Jack? Jack, please, can you hear me?
‘Ianto, let it go!’ Tosh soothed, rubbing his back, whilst trying to keep hold of a mischievous Jonah.
Ianto faced her; Toshiko thought she had never seen anyone look so ready to fight, so much up-pent emotion.
‘Jack’s in there’ he croaked. ‘Make him move, tosh, please. He looks….’
Tosh half smiled and half looked worried, her little son trying to free himself of her grasp.
‘MUMMY! Let go!’, shrieked Jonah, with the typical air of his father.
‘Ianto, be happy’ she said, willing him to believe it. ‘Its going to be fine- he IS fine’.
‘No, he won’t- look at him!’
‘He is FINE, trust me, he’s just exhausted’.
‘But he’s not moving!’
Tosh snorted. ‘Easy to see you’ve never done this’, she said. ‘He’s tired, Ianto!’
She reached out and hugged him tightly, letting her son free; he went flying down thr corridor and jumped at the nearest door.
‘DADDDDDDDDDDDDDDYYYYYYYYYYYY!’
‘It’ll be alright’, she assured Ianto, peeling the small boy off the door.
Ianto stared through the glass in vain, watching Owen attach more tubes to Jack.
Why is he sticking THOSE into him? If Jack’s fine, why does he need them? Fuck, help me!
He knelt against the wall, praying for the angels to come to his door and tell him what to do.
Slowly, he pulled a paper out of his pocket.
He got out a pen.
And began to write.
*
Dear Jack,
I can see you lying there, with all these tubes and wires gathering around you, machines monitoring your every heartbeat.
And it scares the shit out of me.
What do I do, Jack? Stand here and watch you in pain? In discomfort? Ican only sit here, and will you to be fine, so that everything can be perfect for us.
For our family.
So why the hell is it so hard?
I could bang on the glass, rip open the door and wrestle Owen to let me see you, but that would be all I can do. See. I can do nothing to ease any of your burdens, and it kills me.
But I don’t regret any of this, anything that’s happening. Because I love you. In spite of that fact. Jack, I so badly want you to be okay, I want you to be able to walk around again, complimenting me on the same coffee I’ve been making the past ten and a bit years, I want you to stare at my arse when I bend down to pick up your pen, I want you to be there to appreciate the suits I now only wear because you like them.
After all, you took my heart. You could be ruthless, you can act insane and, by God, you can look so fucking gorgeous sometimes, even now. And it all makes me love you more.
The thing is though. I don’t think it matters anymore. You are the only constant left in my life, the one thing I would struggle to save in a raging fire.
Please, please, I’ll give anything, just don’t stop being my constant, my friend and my lover.
Bring in another constant, if you will, but you will have to come with it.
Because I WILL have you, Jack Harkness, I will.
Love,
Your Yan x.

Ianto held Jonah in his arms, whispering in his ear, when Tosh wasn’t looking.
‘I’ll distract your mummy, you climb through the window, okay? Give that letter to your uncle Jack?’
Jonah nodded, regarding the rather bedraggled and tired-looking man in front of him.
‘Yes, uncle Yan’.
*
Owen came out of Jack’s room an hour later, looking confused, but smiling.
‘Jack’s gave you this’, Owen said to Ianto, who jerked up, suddenly awake. ‘Fuck knows, he wasn’t dying, Ianto!’
Ianto glared at him. ‘Thanks, Owen’.
The welsh man waited, but the doctor stared rooted on the spot.
‘Do you mind?’ Ianto quipped. ‘I’d like to have some privacy!’
Owen looked thoroughly bored, but seemed to be enjoying himself.
Something’s will never change, not even in ten years.
‘I already know what it says’ Owen retorted. ‘I had to bloody write it out myself, for him; do you really think I’d flipping let him move? One jerk of his arm, and I’d have a dozen tubes and needles flinging out of him and stabbing me in the backside!’
Ianto sighed and resigned himself to opening the letter, with Owen staring like a particularly annoying hawk.
*
Dearest Yan,
I want you.
I need you.
I love you.
And I’m not going anywhere without you.
Now get your arse in here!
Let’s meet our daughter.
Lots of love,
Your J.H X.
*
Ianto dropped the flimsy sheet on the floor and gaped at the smirking Owen in front of him.
‘I never thought I’d see the day I’d have to write a fucking LOVE LETTER to you!’ Owen said, looking distraught.
‘A….girl?’ Ianto croaked, having not heard Owen.
Torchwood’s doctor groaned. ‘Well, what were you expecting? A giraffe? I very much doubt even Jack could pop one of those out’.
He grabbed Ianto’s upper arm, and pulled him into a one-armed hug. ‘Come on, congratulations, mate! She’s beautiful! That probably means she doesn’t take after you’.
*
Ianto stood, tentatively, by the door, before Owen shoved him forwards.
‘Ianto?’
Jack was looking at him, the pale, deathly look now non-existent. The usual glow was back, overwhelmed with the shine of a new, proud father.
‘Yan! Come here!’ Jack smiled at his lover, tenderly holding a bundle of pink blankets. ‘She’s excited about meeting her tad!’
Ianto reached out for the tiny child, at the very cusp of his heart. He felt his body warm to the delicate creature, like his system was welcoming a new organ.
His daughter.
He kissed her gently on the head, then leaned down to the bed, and kissed his lover, their kiss lingering with passion and desperation for each other.
I HAVE seen the angels today, Ianto thought, to himself as he sat sandwiched between his new family. For better or for worse, I know the angels love me.
*
Tosh sat on her husband’s desk, gripping on to his shoulder.
‘Today was Gwen all over again, wasn’t it?’ se said, smiling softly, stroking her sleeping son’s head, on the chair next to her.
Owen grinned. ‘Yeah, when Emlyn was born. That absolute worst birth ever! At least Jack didn’t scream and try to strangle me’.
Owen pulled Tosh closer. ‘Today was a bit like us, wasn’t it? Jonah?’
They both glanced at their beautiful son; the mix of Japanese and British, the mix of Owen and Tosh.
‘What do you mean? I screamed too’, Tosh pointed out. ‘I was in pain!’
Owen paused, shaking his head. ‘I mean…the …love. You know the way Jack looked so alive? And Ianto looked like he had never been so happy. That was me, 4 years ago. I’m still that happy’.
Tosh bit her lip. ‘Yes’, she said, thoughtfully. ‘We’ve all had the tough times, soon enough, that’s all Torchwood began; pain and devastation. Maybe we should give it a different reputation, yes? Some happiness? I think we deserve it. Jack and Ianto do, definitely’.
Owen glanced at his wife of 7 years- Mrs Toshiko Sato-Harper- with infinite softness. ‘It’s the end then, Toshie’.
She shook her head, her long, jet-black locks swaying at her shoulders. ‘Never, Owen. Nothings ended. I believe, for us, for Jack and Ianto, something’s started’.
They held each other close, a family, like never to let go.
*
The other couple basked in the beauty of their new born. Hardly believing anything so perfect could possibly be within their reach.
‘One day’, Jack whispered to Ianto. ‘We’ll tell her all this’
He looked at Ianto, who beamed at him.
‘Our story, Jack Harkness-Jones’, he said softly. ‘Our story’
